Teaching Artist
Déjà Marie's artistic journey began at the tender age of 3. Being self-taught and coming from a family of Artists and Educators, among other things, she has always had an ambition for creativity.
As a Teaching Artist who collaborates with non-profit after-school organizations, Déjà Marie brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role. A proud alumna of Villa Maria College, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Arts with a specialized focus on Contemporary Social Issues.
Over the past five years, Déjà Marie has curated an array of workshops, spanning West African fashion design, painting, sculpting, crystal jewelry design, and youth entrepreneurship development, among others. Through these dynamic artistic experiences, she cultivates an environment culture that encourages self-expression and promotes cultural competence among her students. Déjà Marie's vision is to equip her students with the confidence and effective communication skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the world, forging deep personal connections, all while staying true to their authentic selves.
Youth Mentor
Déjà Marie often expresses her profound love and joy in working with the youth. Each connection she forms with these vibrant souls and their families holds a special place in her heart. Beyond art instruction, Déjà Marie serves as a devoted youth mentor, passionately empowering her students as they navigate the transformative journey into young adulthood.
The Impact
Through my efforts, it’s my hope that our youth, adults, and elders can learn from each other through expressive and therapeutic artistic engagement to build a better community and future together. As a Teaching Artist, mentor, and business owner, I have thoughtfully served Black and Brown communities where youth have an aspiration for creative expression, but are faced with the lack of funding or resources within the public school systems to promisingly keep art programs alive.
Community Healing
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Déjà Marie holds a profound commitment to the well-being and sustainability of her community. Currently serving as a Public Health Specialist for the NYS Department of Health, she collaborates with the solution-focused non-profit organization The Galactic Tribe, overseeing and facilitating two youth programs and organizing health-centric community events. Simultaneously, she is expanding her education in Public Health Essentials at Cornell University.
Beyond her current role, Déjà Marie aspires to broaden her impact by delving into her passion for holistic nutrition. Pursuing certification in this field, she is resolute in her belief that she can contribute to healing health disparities in Black and Brown communities within her state of New York.
