Have you ever wondered how the textures and colors of the Caribbean would look if they effortlessly blended together? How the waves would look merged next to a volcanic eruption? How the wind would look sweeping up the water and how the sands would create unique clumps and remnants of water patterns on its earth? Or what about the exposure of the sharp rocks that are within the sea? How would this look blended together, forming a solid form of unique textures? One texture, but many.

While creating this piece I became not only inspired, but also fond of a famous Japanese proverb about nature: 花鳥風月 (kachou fuugetsu) meaning, “the beauties of nature.” The kanji each represent one beautiful aspect of nature:

  • 花: “Flower”

  • 鳥: “Bird”

  • 風: “Wind”

  • 月: *Moon”

But together, it represents the beauty of everything around us. It serves as a reminder to enjoy the great outdoors. This inspired the overall idea of my own interpretation of our beautiful nature. Since the beginning of time, every creeping thing and tree has existed together; all existing without truly destroying the other. Nature has existed long before us and could go on to exist without us. The melting, or rather blending of nature this piece depicts, taps into my desire to see this harmony and immortality within humanity one day. This piece is my interpretation of unity flowing and working together in harmony; like that of the wind, sun and water… my interpretation of the textures of the Caribbean.
